closest to the heart (mix)

Aug. 4th, 2006 | 02:21 pm

A friend asked me once, "what music is closest to your heart?"... I thought that was a peculiar way of asking the question, but also much more interesting than asking, "what kind of music do you like?"

A good question deserves a good answer...

DJ'ing tonight at EN

Apr. 22nd, 2006 | 02:33 pm
music: Tristeza - Opiate Slopes

[info]skiplogic was kind enough to think of me and just called to offer up a DJ gig tonight at EN.

We'll be spinning along with the illustrious [info]dieszy starting around 9 or so.

I haven't DJ'd in months, so I'm a bit rusty, but I have a TON of new stuff to play and will attempt at rocking the Serato setup. Here's a taste of what it won't be like:

I'll provide healthy servings of downtempo, techno, and of course some other musical surprises.

Come over and get your pre-funk on or stay and make it your actual funk-funk.

Here's the address:

2429 2nd Ave
Seattle, WA 98121

random spew for you

Oct. 12th, 2005 | 05:01 pm
music: sigur ros - (samskeyti)

  • I was kidnapped into a photo booth on Saturday whilst getting my ass kicked by [info]nonstatic's set of hard techno. The Japanese won't know what hit them next week.

  • [info]iamdonte has been telilng me about how bad ass these guys are for awhile now... live MPC set this Saturday at the Baltic.

John Arnold, Jeremy Ellis, live on the MPC this Saturday

  • also get this on your calendars...

JOSH WINK and FUNKSTORUNG, each playing 2 hr sets
    Sat. Nov.19, 2005 @ Chop Suey, 9p doors
    15 adv, 21+
  • Mr. Piccolo and I are DJ'ing at Trinity next Friday (Oct 21st) as part of the Jizosh vs. Swank bday celebration. Julian and I will be trading off sets from 10 to 1:30 or so. If you want to get on the guest list, send me your full name. Thanks again to [info]jizosh for the sweet gig. I'm looking forward to busting some Pioneer Square bubbles.

Me, Piccolo, Jizosh, and Rick Garcia @ Trinity, Oct 21st

  • I would've loved to be in attendance at this. The original REM line-up, playing some of their best songs. Hopefully it will see the light of day at some point.

  • Does anyone know how to turn an email from an unchanging sender address into an RSS feed? I want to turn my subscriptions to Euphonic and Division into RSS feeds instead of having to read the emails in digest form.

  • An IM conversation that perhaps some of you geeks can relate to from earlier today...

ario: not sure if you're seeing this as much as me... but i'm getting sick of the term Web 2.0
    ario: i think it's a retarded name
ario: the web isn't something that jumps versions like software
ario: it's more like web 1.340234234374323
    donte: exactly
donte: plus the average person will never know what that means. they'll think they have to upgrade their computer or something
    ario: hahah
    ario: it's just too buzzwordy
ario: like, if you want to come out with a new website... and were pitching it to VC
ario: you'd be all "we're totally with the Web 2.0 movement"
ario: just cos your site has tag support or something
    donte: exactly
  • speaking of which, I will try my hardest not to mention Web 2.0 at the Seattle Mind Camp event coming up early next month.

150 geeks get together in a condusive space to share ideas, get feedback on projects, etc. Should be interesting. I plan to get feedback on my web annotation ideas and just listen in on what others are doing.

Joe has a better summary of why this will be cool here.

Add the syndicated journal if you're curious to keep tabs on the event: [info]seattlemindcamp

(via [info]bostonsteamer via [info]eaterofhands via god)

  • Sadly, by going to this, I won't be able to go to the DUX '05 user experience conference which takes place that same weekend in San Francisco. These sessions all looked interseting to me: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6

  • Also, the announcement about Real and Microsoft settling their beef yesterday was great news. RealArcade will be working with the XBox 360 folks to supply some casual games for XBox Live Arcade and I'll most likely get to work on that project.

decibel mix

Sep. 27th, 2005 | 01:50 pm
music: Datach'i - Drowner

download flavors:

one giant 128-bit mp3: ario_-_decibel_mix_9-22-05.mp3

zip file containing individual 192-bit mp3s: ario_-_decibel_mix_9-22-05.zip

the festival this year was nothing short of amazing.  i'm sitting on a big backlog of photos to edit and upload, i'll have more to say as the pics go up. In the meantime, read these recaps by Segal and Moon.

I played a longer version of the set you see above at Barca... this version is edited down to fit onto one audio cd.  If anyone knows the artist name and song title for tracks 5 and 24, let me know.  #5 is taken from the fake Boards of Canada album that's been floating around the internets... but it's still good whoever did it.

This mix incorporates a bit of spoken word and some audio snippets from random files I had laying around on my harddrive... it'll probably be the last mix I'll do for awhile, so enjoy.

I got sick for the first time in months on Sunday as I was having my mind blown by Mr. Thomas Fehlmann.  I think he infected me with some kind of uber-German techno virus which causes high fever and body ache.

So much amazing music packed into one week, it'll take awhile for it all to sink in.

Mono, Bukem, Me, and my DB schedule

Sep. 19th, 2005 | 06:52 pm
music: dj camea - brooklynbytunnel

I don't know where to begin to describe the incredible music I've experienced this past weekend. I've taken a bunch of photos and there'll be some reviewage at a later date.

What's more pressing is the avalanche of amazing music that starts tomorrow with Mono and goes all the way through Sunday, ending with Isolee.

Mono

If you haven't gotten your ticket to this show yet and were on the fence, I highly recommended procurring one online as I'm sure this show will sell out. Their following seems to get bigger and bigger over time, not to mention that they got a write up in this week's Stranger.

Seriously, if you like Mogwai, noise rock, ambient music, My Bloody Valentine, the country of Japan, or any combination of the above, I implore you to catch this show. But please, if you do go, shut your trap during the quiet parts or you're likely to get ninja'd.

LJT Bukem

Then on Wednesday, we have my favorite drum n' bass producer and DJ of all times, LTJ Bukem at Chop Suey. As the heavy, nastier side of dn'b seems to have taken the spotlight in the scene over the years, LTJ has been keeping it real on the more chill side of things. Heck, even one of the writers from the geeky Passionate Users Blog will be in attendance.

Decibel Festival

This week's big event of course is the long anticipated second annual Decibel Festival, showcasing the best (and perhaps obscurest) gems that techno, ambient, and IDM have to offer. While the festival has received a bit of flack for its focus on the geekier side of electronic music, what it does focus on, it focuses on superbly well.

The absence of Massmvmt artists, Codebase, and Mr. Samuel are a bit of a shame, but even so, there is no shortage of talent this year to choose from.

If I had to recommend one "must-hit" DB showcase, it would have to be the Kranky vs Ghostly one on Sunday, featuring the amazingness of Pan American, Aeroc, Loscil, and Lusine. The Experimental Showcase with Hakea, Hecker, Fennesz, Son of Rose will also rock the house (albeit gently).

Also of note... I was lucky enough to snag a spot DJ'ing during the festival as part of the Decibel DJ Lounge this coming Thursday. I'll be on from 6:30 to 8 pm and it's free, so swing by and I'll try and get this thing started off right! I've got a lot of great music to sift through for my set and I'm psyched to be able to contribute this year.

What follows is my personal schedule during the festival... mostly for my own sanity, but also for anyone that may be looking for some recommendations. You'll notice Friday is missing all but one DB act, but that's only because of some unfortunate overlap with the NIN and Disco D shows in town which I can't miss. So without further adieu...

full schedule here (pdf). my review of last year's Decibel Fest here.

For those Decibel attendees out there who use text messaging, I highly recommend taking advantage of Dodgeball during the event to sync up on schedule changes, food coordination, etc.

I'm super psyched and I can't wait to hang out with some of y'all for what should be a truly memorable week!
