i was pretty happy in my self-spun holiday coccoon (observing the holidays in my own cheap crafty loving way) until i set foot in factoria mall to try and find something for my immeditate family, i felt a lil bad JUST giving them fudge. wow. since then ive been in a tizzy about cheap crap vs. expensive crap vs. crap crap and all the hater grinches who taint xmas for me and then all the super neurotic martha stewarts who also taint xmas for me. its not just a season, not just a holiday, its kind of a snowball effect of making half my peeps want to kill themselves and the other half get extra wasted (well okay often its a combination thereof). but i still have this feeling that xmas was once something good in my life, despite family dramedy. to sit by my space heater alone and pretend it was a fire. to dream of sparkly sugary magic in the darkest, gloomiest months. to watch john denver and eat a whole box of chocolate. its not super awesome but its a tradition i often enjoyed.
so im trying to figure out, here on my first sober holidays since i was the legal limit, what its all about, what part i wish to take in it, what part i should actively avoid.
i think im falling victim to stressing about the THINGS and TIME and TREATS im gettign for people i LOVE. when by the time i see these loved one im like FUCK YOU, YOU BETTER LIKE THIS. what i want is to extra focus on my love at this time, and not let things like the mall threaten what is really my greatest gift to give myself and others.
okay there ya go! better i be happy and well enough to see to peoples needs during this stressful time, then be some crazed stabby maven doing the holidays 'proper.' proper is, you dont kill yourself, and i dont stab you. together, we stay alive until spring.

I need to get a coffee mug. The kind that can easily be cupped in the hand in order to warm the hand, as well as have a handle in case the mug is too hot.
I need to pour some good rum into it.

Then sprinkle some Vietnamese cinnamon on top.
And, then, I need to drink it.

i had to freak out this morning about this shooting pain in my jaw and stress and nonstop work + holidays. then in bitching to a friend i realized, this years holiday suicide threat contingent is down 10000% from last year, when i was up to no less than 4 different people i was trying to talk down out of the proverbial bell tower. so yay, its a christmas miracle!

I got approached IN target yesterday by a woman who said that she had run out of gas outside & needed money... she didn't seem cracked out or anything, and she did seem kind of embarrassed, and the whole thing was kind of confusing. I gave her $10 & said merry christmas.
I wonder about that, though. I mean, obviously there's a good chance she's just hitting up people's sense of holiday generosity (although I haven't seen an abundance of it around) but is there even a chance it was true? If so, or even if not, why did she approach ME? what is it about me, you think?

This post is a bit of a random observation. I was watching Lynch (one) for the second time, and I'm curious; there's a scene in the first 20-30 minutes in which David Lynch is photographing outdoors, then unexpectedly there is the sound of a gunshot and woman screaming. Lynch and the entire crew don't seem to notice, which makes me wonder :
a) Are shootings are so common in LA that people don't even pay attention? (i don't mean to suggest the old LA / crime cliche... but weird, right?)
or
b) Was it a sound effect mixed in to the documentary later?
Sure enough if I heard someone getting shot I'd atleast look around to see what was up.

Made it here in one piece yesterday. I slept on the plane, watched dawn over Bristol airport, and then slept again in the car from Bristol to my parent's place in Devon. Which meant that I spent the day feeling tired, but not dead.
Their new house is very nice - apparently it used to be the groundskeepers lodge for the estate it's at the edge of, and it's clearly been upgraded on several occasions - some of the roof timbers are rough hewn from the nearby woods. The ceilings are quite low (about 8-foot), but the rooms are spacious. They're going to be doing a lot of work to it over the next year or so, so it'll be interesting to see how different it is whenever I visit.
They only moved in a short while ago, and the phone only got set up 3 days ago due to BT's incompetence, so there's no broadband yet. I was able to make Dad's life much easier by using my mobile to get him some low-speed internet for him, and also by getting his new iPhone up and running - having to download the entirety of iTunes just to activate it was rather a pain.
Other than braving the warzone that is Tescos things have been delighfully quiet. There aren't even traffic noises here, and the stars are incredibly bright due to the fact that the nearest town is a fair distance away. We decorated the house with tinsel and baubles, ate roast lamb for dinner and then played a game of Citadels, and then bed.
I woke briefly at 3am to use the toilet, and was joined by Uther, my parents' 10-month-old Alsatian. He greeted us at the door when we first arrived, and I was somewhat shocked to discover that he's now long enough to put a paw on each of my shoulders while he washes my face. He's very friendly and playful, although not terribly careful, so Noah (3.5 year old nephew) keeps having to duck at the last minute when a massive tail whips by. In any case, Uther came to investigate who was padding around the house in the middle of the night and then joined me in bed, delighted to find someone awake enough to play with him. He was very well behaved though, as soon as I turned the light out he rested he head on my chest and went straight to sleep. I do miss having a dog sometimes.
Today I have a blocked nose and a sore throat, but neither one is so bad that I care an awful lot. I shall simply hope they don't get worse and spend the day relaxing.
I hope you're all having a similarly relaxing time, or soon will be.
